Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop 2018 – Pretend Obstacle Course

Ruby and I are super excited to be participating in the fourth annual Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop.  Join us for 13 days of awesome dog tricks, fabulous dog treats, and nearly $1500 worth of fun and prizes!

The Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop is a sponsored event. The opinions and ideas in this post are my own and are uninfluenced by any other person or business. The individual sponsors are responsible for their giveaway prizes including shipping.

The Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop: How It Works

The TRICK: Each blogger teaches their dog a new trick and then posts a tutorial. Each trick is different so be sure to visit all participating blogs.

The TREATS: Readers have a chance to win amazing prizes. You can enter on one or ALL blogs to increase your chances of winning. See prizes, participating bloggers, and entry information below.

Ruby’s Trick for Many Treats

Ruby was feeling a little cocky after mastering spin for last year’s Trick or Treat hop. I had to remind her that spin was the first trick she had actually ever learned (besides sit). She kept thinking that this year would be super simple and she could wait until the last minute to start training (or wait, maybe that was me?).

We agreed to participate in this year’s hop back in early September. But life and giant foster cats happen and many weekends passed without practicing anything new. Priorities change or get rearranged because foster cats in dog sweaters.

But finally, we got down to business last Sunday afternoon. I was thinking maybe we might have to make a fake video because there was no way Ruby could learn to weave between cones in one day – NO WAY!

But guess what? She nailed it after only a few tries. We are pretty sure she was just trying to impress Teddy who was watching the whole thing from the front window.

How We Trained Ruby To Do A Mini-Obstacle Course (AKA Weave)

Disclaimer: Feel free to skip steps 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 & 9 if you (or your dog) are on the normal end of the spectrum.

Step 1: Wait until the very last minute. Panic. Eat lots of chips (us, not Ruby).

Step 2: Make husband drive to Home Depot in the middle of the night to buy cones, telling him that they are for a last minute school project.

Step 3: Set cones up in a line in the driveway. Position Ruby at one end.

Step 4: Abandon cones, pick up rake, and do pretend yard work when your neighbor with the fancy (smart as heck) black labs asks what you are doing.

Step 5: Wait until your neighbor and his lovely labs drive away (probably off to climb Mount Everest or solve world hunger) and then resume training.

Step 6: Lead Ruby through the cones holding a treat, repeating the word “weave” 10,000 times.

Step 7: Stand near cone 2 (with Ruby positioned at cone 1) and continue repeating the word “weave” 10,000 more times. Once she weaves around the first two cones, move back to cone 3.

Step 8: Jump up and down like a crazy person when she finally weaves around all three cones on her own.

Step 9: Ask Mini-Me (who fancies herself a filmmaker) if she could maybe edit out the jumping up and down part of the video.

My two boys would likely not be interested in doing this, but it would be a great trick to teach my girl, Megumi. She’ll be two in January and has a LOT of extra energy. I need to find creative ways to get her to burn some of her energy off. She’s also very smart and I think could learn this.

  11. October 18, 2018 / 1:13 pm

Thanks for sharing the wonderful contest with us. We are going to show this to the pet owners that come in here so they can show off their tricks with their little ones. Ruby, we loved the video of you showing off your skills. Great to see you having so much fun. Have a great day and good luck to all.

I want to teach her how to fetch MY items, not just her toys! A great example would be my hair brush in the mornings! Crawling and jumping thru a hoop would be great tricks too!

  39. October 20, 2018 / 7:39 am

I would love to teach my dog to sleep in his own dog bed instead of my bed!

  40. October 20, 2018 / 8:45 am

Yay, Ruby!! What a quick study you are! I thought I was the only one who left everything until the last minute. 🙂
I like this trick, and I think it would be fun to teach Luke this. I tried it with weave poles once but had limited success.I probably still have them somewhere, but we also have some cones which might work better, so hubby won’t have to run to Home Depot under false pretenses. Not that he’s not used to me asking him to do crazy things. LOL
