When Your Socially Awkward Dog Becomes A Cool Cat

I think it is fair to say that neither Ruby nor I will ever be described as cool – like never ever. We are both introverts and a wee bit socially awkward. Not all introverts are socially awkward, and some are even cool, but we are not those introverts.

I am OK with the introvert thing: I like my introvert ways but being socially awkward is challenging for both of us at times. Ruby is weird around bikers, joggers, and occasionally plumbers. She’s afraid of our backyard, anything that squeaks, and the kitchen cabinets because they might unexpectedly open and gobble her up. She’s also socially awkward around other dogs. Not all dogs, just some dogs. It’s like she doesn’t know how to be a normal dog (in the same way I don’t always know how to carry on normal conversation). We are outsiders in a hopelessly uncool but nice way.

But then Teddy burst on the scene and saved the day!

Socially awkward dog becomes a cool cat

Pre-Teddy days, I always worried that Ruby might be missing companionship with her own kind, someone with fur who walks on four legs. She has always loved cats, but Rosie is hit or miss and kind of fickle with her friendship.

Teddy is not shy or awkward (not even a tiny bit). In fact, he’s kind of a cool cat; charismatic, happy-go-lucky with a little extra spring in his paws. He’s also our most normal pet – only he’s kind of super-sized and dog-like so maybe not totally normal. We like our pets complicated, and extra special.

my dog is socially awkward

Remember the Seinfeld episode where George has a guy crush on Elaine’s boyfriend Tony cause he’s so cool? That’s kind of what’s happening between Ruby and Teddy: Teddy is Tony and Ruby is George and if she could make him some delicious sandwiches she would.

So now Ruby is part of the in-crowd, a cool cat by association. They snuggle on the couch, share sweaters (cause they are conveniently the same size). Teddy sits in the front window and stalks chipmunks; Ruby sits in the front window and stalks Teddy. And yes, Teddy occasionally mistakes Ruby’s tail for a feather toy, but what’s a little tailgating between friends?

No more awkward silences because Teddy fills them up with happy chirps. Ruby has finally found her wolf pack or lion pride or weird, socially awkward canine-feline hybrid. Being part of a power couple is super fun: Bonny & Clyde, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, Batman and Robin, Lucy and Ricky, Barbie & Ken, peanut butter and jelly, Ruby and Teddy!

Well, they do say that opposites attract. And if anyone ever wants to know why you are a foster failure again, you can say it was all for Ruby:)

My sisters are very social with people and all other animals they come across. I am really social with people, but a bit fearful of other dogs since I have gotten older. Mom is an introvert, but she says we dogs bring her out. Dog sports are something she loves and she is pretty good a mingling with other pet parents at dog events, but that is about the only place.

oh my this was PRECIOUS and I can soooo relate!!!!!!! Dakota isn’t a fan of most dogs, he is super particular about people as well….certain things scare (or upset him), as is the case with Ruby. Cody is the Polar opposite. Cody thinks EVERYONE who enters our home is visiting HIM exclusively…..he is brave, super outgoing, hilarious……….(Dakota hides behind him)…they love each other, play together…Cody pretty much likes Dakota more than any animal has liked Dakota. Dakota IDOLIZES Cody and follows him everywhere. Cody calls the shots. This post was precious and your photos are DARLING!! I wish Dakota was small like Ruby because it’s hard for me to get photos of he and Cody together. That sweater on Teddy is too stinkin’ cute!!!

I love this SO much, especially the photo of them both wearing sweaters! We often say that no one is normal in our household (animal or human), and we wouldn’t know what to do with anyone that was. 🙂

I’m with my tribe when I’m with my cats. Yeah. We’re not cool in the least, but we always have fun! We actually embrace our complete nerdiness. Bear’s been really good at showing me how to live – sounds like Ruby might have the same kind of example in Teddy.

What a sweet post ! It’s always nice to have a friend, no matter his size or his color. Purrs

What a wonderful post! I loved the Seinfeld reference… it was perfect. I think that R does something similar for Shyla, even when we’re out and about. She’s cool by association but that coolness goes away as soon as she’s by herself. Thanks for such a fun post!
