I think it is fair to say that neither Ruby nor I will ever be described as cool – like never ever. We are both introverts and a wee bit socially awkward. Not all introverts are socially awkward, and some are even cool, but we are not those introverts.
I am OK with the introvert thing: I like my introvert ways but being socially awkward is challenging for both of us at times. Ruby is weird around bikers, joggers, and occasionally plumbers. She’s afraid of our backyard, anything that squeaks, and the kitchen cabinets because they might unexpectedly open and gobble her up. She’s also socially awkward around other dogs. Not all dogs, just some dogs. It’s like she doesn’t know how to be a normal dog (in the same way I don’t always know how to carry on normal conversation). We are outsiders in a hopelessly uncool but nice way.
But then Teddy burst on the scene and saved the day!
Pre-Teddy days, I always worried that Ruby might be missing companionship with her own kind, someone with fur who walks on four legs. She has always loved cats, but Rosie is hit or miss and kind of fickle with her friendship.
Teddy is not shy or awkward (not even a tiny bit). In fact, he’s kind of a cool cat; charismatic, happy-go-lucky with a little extra spring in his paws. He’s also our most normal pet – only he’s kind of super-sized and dog-like so maybe not totally normal. We like our pets complicated, and extra special.
Remember the Seinfeld episode where George has a guy crush on Elaine’s boyfriend Tony cause he’s so cool? That’s kind of what’s happening between Ruby and Teddy: Teddy is Tony and Ruby is George and if she could make him some delicious sandwiches she would.
So now Ruby is part of the in-crowd, a cool cat by association. They snuggle on the couch, share sweaters (cause they are conveniently the same size). Teddy sits in the front window and stalks chipmunks; Ruby sits in the front window and stalks Teddy. And yes, Teddy occasionally mistakes Ruby’s tail for a feather toy, but what’s a little tailgating between friends?
No more awkward silences because Teddy fills them up with happy chirps. Ruby has finally found her wolf pack or lion pride or weird, socially awkward canine-feline hybrid. Being part of a power couple is super fun: Bonny & Clyde, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, Batman and Robin, Lucy and Ricky, Barbie & Ken, peanut butter and jelly, Ruby and Teddy!
