The Best Scratching Post Ever & Other Feline Must Haves From Tuft + Paw

In case you haven’t heard the news, we have a foster cat and by foster cat, I mean we have an almost failed foster cat and he’s probably staying. But Teddy, a.k.a. Couscous, is such a great cat that failing is actually winning. So hurray for us!

All is going pretty well. Teddy gets along well with Ruby and even occasionally likes to play with her tail. Teddy is not shy, almost never sits still and has a serious sock fetish. He’s about the same size as Ruby and sometimes acts more dog-like than she does. The last holdout in our failed foster adoption process is Rosie. She’s not being so welcoming – like at all. We have been watching lots of Jackson Galaxy videos to see if we can work some cat mojo magic and convince Rosie that big giant boy cats are super fun.

Teddy's Choice for best scratching post ever

For now, Teddy is spending most of his time upstairs in my office and bedroom. Sometimes he ventures out into the hallway and plays on the stairs (Teddy never went to kindergarten so he doesn’t know that playing on stairs is unsafe). Eventually Rosie appears at the bottom of the stairs, mad as heck, and chases poor Teddy back into the bedroom. She’s about half his size, but her might could move mountains. We don’t call her Da Boss cat for nothing.

The Turrim is the best scratching post ever

A few weeks ago the feline loving folks at Tuft + Paw sent Teddy the best scratching post to occupy his time while Rosie gets over herself and calms down. Teddy is only 15 months old and has already been surrendered to the city shelter twice – once because he had fleas and the second time because his family was moving. Clearly, he needs something of his very own and the Turrim Scratching Post is a perfect match for this rough and tumble big boy.

The Turrim is a 28 inch tall, extremely durable scratching post that encourages cats to scratch, climb, and have fun. The post is infused with organic catnip, wrapped in natural sisal fibers, and constructed with sustainable wood certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. It’s also pretty much indestructible even for a dog-sized cat with kitten energy and enthusiasm like Teddy.

Choosing the Best Scratching Post For Your Cat

The Turrim Scratching Post checks all the boxes for what to look for in a scratching post. Bonus points: it is super easy to assemble with clear directions and only two parts, the base and post.

Height and sturdiness: The Turrim is tall enough for Teddy to fully extend his body while scratching and sturdy enough that it doesn’t wobble when he climbs up or leans into it.

Variety of surfaces and materials: The Turrim includes natural sisal for scratching and a birch wood base for lounging, eating a treat, batting a toy, or more scratching. The post is also enhanced with organic catnip!

Vertical and horizontal surfaces: As you can see in the photos, the Turrim Scratching Post has plenty of both and is perfect for all feline shapes and sizes!

No kitties here, but that doesn’t stop us from admiring how handsome Teddy is!!! He landed himself the best foster/forever home ever:) It might take some time, but we are betting Rosie comes around once she gets used to the big boy.

I love hearing about foster fails, he is a cutie. Have you tried a calming collar on Rosie? They work well for our resident bully, Sammy. I would choose PAWS in CT.

Mine would LOVE that scratching post. Okay, okay … ELLIE would love the post – she scratches where she should … but we’ve noticed a definite consideration when Bear’s scratching wherever he wants. She just might go over to the dark side soon!

Welcome Teddy/Couscous. We hope you can win Rosie over! Some times these things take a bit of time…especially when you have been the Queen of the house forever ;p

the critters in the cottage xo

As grey and white cats are wont to be, Teddy is a real looker. Sorry Rosie, you’re just gonna have to suck it up this time. Teddy has had a tough life. Time to reinnerduce the two of them by making sure that Rosie has plenty of things with Teddy’s smell on them.
Since I only really know rescues in NJ who use fosters, if I win I’d like PAWS of Norwalk, CT, to get the scratching post which looks just like my Ultimate Scratcher that I used to climb up when I was young too.

I can see why you’re probably going to foster fail (again), but like you said, it is really a win for all of you! My local shelter, Humane CNY, would appreciate a Tuft Scratching Post.

  23. August 22, 2018 / 8:07 pm

Yes, failing is actually winning! I have two to prove it – Woodrow and Harley. I really do hope that Rosie comes along. We knew we wanted to adopt Woodrow early on, but we didn’t finalize it for a couple months just to make sure everything was okay with the three original resident cats. Olive wasn’t too happy, but she’s grown to…um…ignore him for the most part. 🙂 I nominate The Zoo Animal Rescue.

Tree House Humane Society in Chicago is amazing. They help SO many cats and I’m sure would appreciate winning this.

  25. August 23, 2018 / 8:22 am

I’d love to win one for NH Kittens.

I’m sorry that Rosie is not coming around, but rewarding her for ignoring Teddy will help. I have also found that talking to the cats and explaining that he isn’t here to replace her or take anything from her but that he needed help and ask her to help him understand things can go a long way in cat on cat relations. If you need more help, I HIGHLY recommend the book Cat vs Cat by Pamela Johnson-Bennett. It was very helpful when I had some cat conflicts in my house a number of years ago.
