While working and volunteering in shelters, I often wished I had a book to give adopters with young children to help foster a smooth transition. Children generally have good intentions, but sometimes lack the experience and understanding on how to best care for their new pets as well as how their behavior impacts their furry friends. Maybe they get too excited, grow impatient, or are unintentionally careless – all of which can lead to injury, loss, or pets being returned to shelters.
Fortunately, I now have the perfect book for families with young children. Love Me Gently: A Kid’s Guide for Man’s Best Friend by Lisa Wiehebrink is an adorable, easy to read book that teaches children about compassion, unconditional love, and how to treat pets kindly and responsibly.
Love Me Gently is the story of Henry and his newly adopted puppy, Cooper. This lovely book is divided into simple lessons including feeding guidelines, gentle handling, patience in training, and safety issues. Parents will enjoy reading this beautifully written book aloud while children will have just as much fun following the story through the colorful illustrations. Lisa says the story of Henry and Cooper was inspired by watching her sons interact with their family dogs.
Love Me Gently is available through Lisa’s website with a portion of all sales donated to animal shelters and rescues. In addition to her book, Lisa’s website is a great resource for pet care and adoption information as well as humane education. Lisa lives in southern California with her husband, two sons, and two dogs. She is passionate about all animals and encourages rescue and adoption.
