My dearest friends,
Sometimes things don’t go as planned …
The last few days have been very difficult. I have had trouble breathing, walking, and even eating. My family hoped I would rally as I have so many other times. But not this time …
We visited my vet yesterday afternoon. She felt my latest symptoms were a result of something neurological, possibly a stroke. My body was shutting down and my quality of life decreasing rapidly. She sent us home with some pain medication to help me sleep and remain comfortable over night. My family and I spent last night curled up together on the couch, remembering all the wonderful moments we have shared together. I even enjoyed a mini-cheeseburger (a real one this time). We all agreed that it was time for me to go. I insisted that I could hang on if they needed me, but they assured me that it was OK to let go.
My friends, I have lived an extraordinary life filled with love and laughter, naps on the couch, fancy clothing, and lots and lots of treats. My family has included me in everything – all life events, big and small, joys and sadness, beginnings and endings. What more could a dog or anyone want? Maybe more cheeseburgers, but I trust there will be many waiting for me on the other side …
In addition to my family, I have ALL OF YOU – friends from near and far, Scotland, England, Italy, Hungary, France, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and almost every state in U.S. Through you I have experienced the best in the world – you have given me hope and shown me what is possible when people support and accept each other in spite of differences and distance. Thank you! Your support of my blog has meant more to my family than you will ever know!
I want to leave you with a few of my favorite quotes. These are words that my family and I will hold dear in the days ahead.
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or felt or even touched – they must be felt with the heart – Helen Keller
Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree – Martin Luther
When life gives you lemons, eat ice cream – Mr. Pip (that’s me)
By the time you read this, I will have crossed the bridge. And tonight when you gaze at the stars, think of me and know that I am shining down on all of you – between bites of heavenly cheeseburgers.
Thank you for the years of love and laughter.
Your pal, Pip
